Privacy Policy for FlavorShelf
This Privacy Policy explains how FlavorShelf (“the App”, “we”, “us”) handles information when you use it. FlavorShelf is an offline-first recipe manager. We designed it to keep your data on your device wherever possible, and we do not require you to create an account or sign in.
Summary
- We do not require an account, name, email, or login.
- Your recipes, meal plans, saved images, and settings are stored locally on your device.
- When you use the recipe import feature, the content you’re importing may be sent to our service and to trusted third-party services that read it and pull out the recipe details, which are then returned to your device. Everything else in the app works offline.
- A random code for your app — not your name, and nothing that identifies you — is used to count your free imports and keep the service fair. It resets if you reinstall the app.
- Purchases are handled by Google Play Billing; we never see or store your payment details.
- We do not sell your data or use it for advertising.
Information stored on your device
The following is created and stored only on your device (in the App’s local database and settings), and is not transmitted to us:
- Recipes you create, edit, or import (titles, ingredients, instructions, images, categories, notes).
- Meal plans and planner entries.
- Images you save or attach to recipes.
- App preferences such as theme, filters, and premium status.
- A random code for your app and a count of how many free imports you’ve used (explained under “Import limits and keeping things fair” below).
Because this data is local, it is removed when you uninstall the App or clear its data. We recommend backing up anything important, as we cannot recover on-device data for you.
Recipe import feature
FlavorShelf lets you import recipes from a web link, from a social media link (such as Instagram or TikTok), or from text you paste or share into the App. Importing is the only feature that sends anything off your device, and only when you actively trigger it.
We try your device first. Whenever it can, the App reads the recipe right on your phone and sends nothing anywhere. Content is only sent for processing when a page or post can’t be read on your device.
When content is sent. If processing is needed, the App sends the content it needs for that import — the link you gave it, or the recipe text or caption — over a secure connection to our service, which runs on secure cloud servers. Our service passes the content to a trusted third-party service that reads it and sends back the recipe’s title, ingredients, and steps, which are saved on your device.
These services handle the content you import under their own privacy terms, and — depending on the service — they may keep it for a while and use it to run and improve their own services. Only the content needed for the import you asked for is sent, and only at the moment you ask for it. The finished recipe comes back to your device, and imports aren’t linked to you, because the App has no accounts.
Import limits and keeping things fair
So we can offer a number of free imports and stop people from misusing the service, a little extra information is sent along with each import:
- A random code for your app. The App creates a random code for your installation and sends it with each import so we can count how many free imports you’ve used. It’s just a random code — not your name, your Google account, or anything that identifies you — it’s never used for advertising or to track you across other apps, and it resets if you reinstall the App.
- A genuine-app check from Google. Each import includes a security check from Google Play that confirms the request is coming from a real, unmodified copy of FlavorShelf (not a fake or tampered version). This helps stop misuse of the free service, and is handled by Google under the Google Privacy Policy.
- Subscription check (premium only). If you subscribe, the App checks with Google that your subscription is active, and keeps premium imports within a fair daily limit. We never see your payment details.
We also keep basic, anonymous records of the import service — for example, which AI service handled a request, whether it worked, and roughly how much work it took — so we can keep things running smoothly and manage costs. These records don’t include your recipes and don’t identify you.
Purchases
FlavorShelf offers an optional premium tier. Purchases and subscriptions are processed entirely by Google Play Billing. We do not receive or store your payment card details. Google’s handling of that information is governed by the Google Privacy Policy.
Data we do not collect
- We do not collect your name, email address, phone number, or contacts.
- We do not collect precise or approximate location.
- We do not use third-party advertising or tracking SDKs.
- We do not sell or rent any personal information.
Children’s privacy
FlavorShelf is a general-audience app and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Security
Import requests are transmitted over encrypted (HTTPS) connections. While no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, we take reasonable measures to protect the limited data the App handles.
Your choices
- You can use most of the App entirely offline; imports are the only feature that contacts external services.
- You can delete any recipe, meal plan, or image at any time within the App.
- You can remove all App data by clearing the App’s storage or uninstalling it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Effective date” above. Continued use of the App after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
